It has been a long time since I have had a dedicated document scanner – most multi-function printers come with a built in scanner and as such there has not been much of a need for a scanner. That said, when the multi-function printer quits it takes its ability to scan with it. Although it takes a lot more desk space to have separate devices I personally prefer having separate devices, one for each major function, for this very reason. This Canon scanner is a very lightweight and portable model that requires almost no brainwork at all.I took the scanner out of the box and plugged it in immediately, expecting Windows 8.1 to complain about missing drivers. Instead, it found the exact model, loaded up drivers for it and was ready to go without requiring installation media. On my laptop this process took about 2 minutes. Now, I suspect there are utilities and tools on the included CD that make working with the scanner a lot easier but I have no need for more than basic... Before I had to go to the office/den to do any scanning which was fine, but with this CanoScan LiDE120 I can now scan from the kitchen table, no external power needed, everything is powered from the USB port, this works perfectly with the MBP, software downloaded directly from Canon. Scanning books is much easier now, if you have tried scanning books on a multifunctional printer, you need to balance the book while scanning because the platform is usually higher, with this low profile scanner, the book can just sit on the table comfortably. Scanning book pages into PDF is nice and easy. Photo scanning is even easier, you just put them in the platform 4 4x6 photos fits perfectly and by adding gaps between each photo they will be split into separate .jpg files. Overall very happy with the quality of this scanner! |
